Hip roof ridge support.

The last picture is the japanese hip roof. The most classic type of house roof is a gable roof which has two roof planes and a triangle topped wall at either end known as a gable wall. The first picture is the coop i am building. It is sometimes also referred to as a dutch gable roof precisely because it contains both roof style features.

A variation on this is the hip roof which has no gable walls. A ridge board is a non structural member that serves as a prop for opposing rafters to rest against and connect to. A hip roof hip roof or hipped roof is a type of roof where all sides slope downwards to the walls usually with a fairly gentle slope although a tented roof by definition is a hipped roof with steeply pitched slopes rising to a peak. This article describes and illustrates the different types of support that prevents roof sagging and wall bulging at buildings including definitions of collar ties rafter ties and structural ridge beams. Note the 2x6 beam in the center of the room to support the 2 roofs. Instead it has an additional roof plane at each end of the central horizontal ridge. The second picture is the coop design i am using for a reference.

The gable portion of a dutch hip roof is usually placed at the end of the roof ridge and sits on top of the plane of the hip roof. Thus a hipped roof house has no gables or other vertical sides to the roof. Some of these can support the roof and prevent ridge sagging and wall spreading. A square hip roof is shaped like a pyramid.

Please note i have not drawn the gable end framing yet which will obviously support the ridge beams. Ridge beam sizing is based on the span of the beam between supports and the amount of roof load supported by the beam.
